Hands In Soil

Hands In Soil manifest during our Artist Residency Renaturing the City with the Bag Factory, Johannesburg. This collaborative project emerged with the Kofifi Theatre Company based at Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre in Sophiatown, Johannesburg. It evolved as a sequence of food and soil rituals first in Sophiatown, and then as a sequence of five performative rituals including Tastes of Maboneng, Taste the Garden at the Food Wine Design Fair, at the Bag Factory and at Rebirth with the NROX Foundation in the Cradle of Humankind. Song to Soil records Koffifi’s performance that marked the opening of the joint show (dis)locations: (trans)formations that marked the end of our three-month residency with the Bag Factory.

Hands In Soil ritual opened our performative contributions to Third Paradise-Rebirth Day 12.12.2012 at NIROX Foundation in the Cradle of Humankind, South Africa. The ritual earthenware bowl contains living soils gathered from local biodyanmic and organic farms and gardens during our Renaturing the City Residency.

Kofifi actor Billy Langa reflects: “Hands in soil is where we start creating, that moment of stillness, activating your senses, feeling your truth, appreciating your feelings without judging. Let’s see what the soil will give us. It brings us down to earth”.
